Abelanavr is the VR Education Company. Their goals aim to connect the students and teachers in a virtual environment. https://www.abelanavr.com/
Here is more information below in the Youtube video.
In Abelanavr, they provide several courses such as Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, Literature, Social VR.
Pros
- Experience (you can interact with items and play with them)
- Immersive environment (Oh! yes! it has an immersive environment, but we should be careful of novel effect)
- fun (motivation perspective: the students can modify the atoms and interact with it. It may increase students' motivation)
Cons
- Too distracted (it is difficult to catch which one is the speaker talking about)
- Connection problem (this can be a technical problem. VR needs lots of data and networking system. If the network in your home is slow, the connection of the application can also be really slow. it may lose the users' interest if it happens frequently)
- Individual Education Vs. Group Education (I am not sure that this application is for individual education or group education. It seems that they have both modules. However, in group education especially in the classroom, it is important to have attention to the teacher. I am not sure how the teacher can make attention from an individual student in the virtual world)
Summary
Overall, it is a great idea, but in reality, I am not sure how the students can fully engage in this application. Teaching in a virtual environment should be different than teaching in the physical world because the virtual world is anonymous. It may be more difficult to control the students. In that point of view, we need to provide more power for teachers to control the students. It may be a different and powerful strategy to spy on individuals. To use virtual reality in education, it is not a matter for interaction or fun. I believe it is a matter for how we convey the lessons thoroughly to the student. Teaching process should have a framework. Sometimes, total freedom isn't good in education.
